1. Board Race

Board Race is a classic vocabulary revision game that can be adapted to any level and age group. Split the class into two teams and draw a line down the middle of the board. Write a topic at the top, and students must write as many related words as possible in the form of a relay race. Each team receives a point for every correctly written word, excluding any that are unreadable or misspelled.

2. Simon Says

Simon Says is one of the most entertaining and well-known games all around the world which helps students to enhance comprehension skills and vocabulary skills as well. In this activity, the teacher takes on the role of "Simon" and stands at the front of the classroom. They perform actions while saying "Simon says [action]."

The students need to imitate these actions. However, if the teacher performs an action without saying "Simon says," any student who copies it will be out of the game. The last student standing becomes the winner. To make it more challenging, you can increase the speed of the actions. This game works especially well for young learners.

3. Word Jumble Race

Another ESL engaging activity is the Word Jumble Race, which fosters teamwork and competition in a classroom setting. It's a great way to practice tenses, word order, spelling, writing skills, and grammar. Prepare several sentences in different colors, cut them into individual words, and place each sentence in separate containers. Divide the class into teams, each team must then arrange the words in their correct order.

The team that successfully puts all the sentences together in the right order will be declared as winner of this game. You can adjust this activity to suit participants of all ages and skill levels in English language learning.

4. Hangman

Hangman is one of the classic games that can serve as a great warm-up or time-filler activity. It works well with any class size and can be adjusted to match the student's level. Start by thinking of a word and writing the number of letters on the board using dashes. Encourage students to suggest letters and if they guess correctly, write them in the corresponding positions.

If they manage to guess the word correctly, they win!

However, if you finish drawing a hanging man before they guess the word, then you win. Hangman offers an enjoyable way to practice vocabulary and can be an exciting challenge for students of all ages.

5. Storytelling

Storytelling is a versatile activity that can be customized for students at any proficiency level. Begin by presenting a set of pre-made pictures associated with a particular story. Shuffle the pictures and ask students to arrange them in the correct order without knowing the actual story.

Once the pictures are arranged, read out loud the accurate version of the story and let students see how well they predicted the sequence.

This activity works wonders as an icebreaker or as an introduction to new vocabulary or grammar lessons. It can be simplified for beginners or made more complex for advanced learners as well.
