Special education is also known as special-needs education, aided education, exceptional education, special ed., SEN or SPED. It helps to address the individual differences with special needs. Teaching a special learner is not so easy, the process involves systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials. Special education is tailored to meet the needs of students who require special attention.

Special education is also considered as a service rather than a job and there are many learning disabilities. It is important to have two teachers in one class when dealing with exceptional children.

Get to the root of the matter: As a special educator, it is very important for you to know the background of each learner. A teacher should identify the root cause of their behaviour and try and give their best to address their needs. There are several disabilities that are there, recognizing the disability through constant observation, report and analysis is very important. Have constant communication with children and parents which helps you to get to scratch and understand things. A special educator needs to be more observable and has to notice every little change and actions which children perform.

Ask for support: A classroom should have two teachers and there should be coordination between two teachers. The work and ideas to solve the problem should be equally shared. If there is any kind of support needed in the class then asking for help would be a better idea that you can follow. As different children possess different needs, as an educator, it is important to tackle each student needs.

Be patient and calm: There will be various situations in the classroom where in you need to show a lot of patience and calmness. Amidst the busy schedule, it is good to take out time for yoga, reflective journals and relaxation exercise.

Plan and stick to it: It is always a good idea to plan a day earlier about the next day schedule. Plan out the day’s activity and stick to plan made. Considering all the factors in the classroom teacher should be well prepared in advance. Try and set rules and proper routine and make it a habit for children to follow. Implement creativity and different learning styles in your lesson. Make the plan more interesting to the children and while making, think from the point of view of the learner.

Involving administration if necessary: If there is any kind of critical situation it is a good idea to involve the management. Management should be kept in the loop and all the updates should be shared with each other so that there is better learning of the problems through the experience.

Positive environment: Teachers should develop positive learning environment wherein teachers as well as learners feel comfortable in teaching and learning. The learning environment has a lot to do with the social, emotional and cognitive growth and development of the child. Learning process goes smoothly when the environment is good for learning especially for the slow learners,

Good behaviour can be rewarded: Rewarding good behaviour is very important. It acts as an encouragement to the children and ultimately they try to do best the next time. Also, the learners who are slow or lack behind learn and try to achieve the objectives as everyone likes to be awarded.

Appreciation and encouragement: Encouragement and appreciation go hand in hand. A child should be appreciated for hid good deeds and good behaviour. On the other hand, encouragement makes them put their best and children believe in themselves. Thus, there should always be appreciation and motivation to the learners so that they do their best and have a happy learning process.

Communication with children: Children feel good when educators give them the importance and treat them with respect. So, teachers should take time amidst the busy week to sit in personal with students and have communication with children. Once the children are comfortable, they will share their views and opinion.

They need to possess special skills to deal with these personalities and help them grow by giving them the confidence and courage to believe in themself.
